DoT, IoT, SNA and Cloud Computing: A Threat or An Aid to Intellectual Property Rights and Human Civilization?
‘Imagine a day, when you wake up and see that that your cup, from which you are drinking tea in the morning is covered with all the information and whereabouts ranging from the procedure, technique, material used and all the information in such simple words that even the beggars would be millionaires and everyone is having a factory making their household goods. There is no room for carpenters, plumbers, blacksmiths and at every market, the robots are communicating like that of humans. There would be no scientists on the border, no government jobs, as everything would be digitalized. There would be no regulating agency to patents, copyrights and trademarks. All humans need to do is to have creative ideas and be there in a rat race for new inventions only. There would be only science and technology which governs the world.’ [hk2]
What would it feel like? There is no division of labour[hk3] . Everyone would be self-sufficient and the only purpose of human beings would be to think more creative and innovative ideas to make the world a cozy place to live in.
That day is not far away, since with the advent of the scientists of Israel would start using DoT i.e. ‘DNA of Technology’.[i] In simpler words, this technology means that there would be all the information printed in a digital format on the cup itself, which would help anyone to make it as simple as it is to make Maggi by pouring it out into boiling water for two minutes. What if there is an open competition and no one would need to do strenuous labour day in and day out. There would be an epitome of the world where all you need is to focus on creative ideas![ii]
‘Another technology which is a buzzword in today’s era is IoT[hk4] . What if Artificial Intelligence would be replaced with all the shopkeepers. These robots are hitting nuts and talking mimicking similar behaviour as that of humans.’[hk5]
The study done by various scientists on this topic evolved the concepts such as Machine Learning, Deep Learning is one of such process where the robots are learning about various emotions, behaviours and attitudes of human psychology. This is done by us voluntarily by providing these robots with information such as daily Instagram stories, voice messages, and Facebook and Twitter tweets. The study of various emotions of love, happiness, sad, neutral, and anxiety which is all monitored by these robots via Snapchat and many other intellectual tools.[iii]
Evolving the technology today we can observe that there are various technologies even at the nano and micro level!
‘What if there is a disease and you want to cure it? What if you fear the side effects? Looking at this situation scientists came up with a new idea, where only the target organ would get the impact of the therapy. This in other words implies that the other cells and organs don’t need to bear the wear and tear process. This is a special technology evolved when it comes to the Cancer Cells.’[iv][hk6]
Scientists have found the special ‘Spherical Nucleic Acids’ or SNA to avoid the trouble of regular drugs. What’s so special in them? Well, most of the drugs are non-specific which means they can affect many cells and organs, not just the diseased one. This is the main reason we encounter various side-effects. But there lies the remedy for this as well.[v]
These SNAs are designed such [hk7] that it affects only the affected area or diseased-gene.[vi] It’s that an elixir to life! SNAs are not the magic bullet and will have to go through a greater number of tests before it can be used on a number of patients.[vii]
All these technologies work on the micro-level. Keeping an eye on this fact, there is a Cold War going on between the USA and Huawei,[viii] which revolves around the microchips called semi-transistors. These transistors require a lots of minute connections, which form the basic structure of these semiconductors.[ix]
This is a clear indication that there is a need to focus on the semiconductors and the intellectual property rights pertaining to Integrated Circuits, apart from patent law, copyright law, trademark and design act.[x]
In the light of the above analysis, it is evident that the human civilization would evolve dramatically in the coming decades and centuries. The technology such as 5G would dominate the world. This can be verified by the fact that today, with the evolution of technology such as ‘Cloud Computing’, a technology where users need not maintain or own his own hardware and infrastructure but simply access ‘data center’ created by someone else via the Internet. The technologies such as WordPress, Canva and various other platforms such as blogging corroborate the evolution of technology in the 21st century.[xi]
In a country like India, we can see the evolution of various technologies such as Startup India[xii], Swayam[xiii], AICTE[xiv], Online Courses, Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna[xv], etc. upheld the inexhaustive efforts and changing world day by day, second by second. Now it would be profound to see, whether one day we would venerate Mr. John McCarthy – the father of Artificial Intelligence[xvi], or curse for creating social distancing, isolation, loneliness, depression and hampering social contact with the near and dear one’s physically present in front of us[hk10] !
